Writing a Winning CV

Tuesday, April 28, 2009

Your CV will very often be the first impression of you that an employer will have. Here are some important ideas that will help you write a winning CV and get you noticed.

  • Use a personal profile that describes your career goals and gives specific examples of two or three main strengths and how they were developed. Avoid general comments such as “good communicator” and try to tailor this section to your target employer
  • Include details of your education with the most recent first. Illustrate the skills that you have developed on your courses that will be of relevance to your employer
  • When including your career history use the language given to you by the job description and the job advert. Show career progression as this will set you above the competition
  • Demonstrate how you have specifically added value in your different roles showing impact made on the bottom line
  • Describe your key responsibilities and indicate your number of direct reports
  • Show evidence of potential and a willingness to learn and develop.
  • Finally make your CV easy to read with clear headings, ideally your CV should be no longer than two to three pages as employers will have a lot to read through.
