Aims of the courseThe course is intended for
  • site supervisors
  • site operatives
  • any persons wanting to expand their knowledge of the construction industry and surveying
The objectives of the course are to enable you to be able to
  • Carry out all necessary mathematical calculations in both longhand and using a scientific calculator
  • identify discrepancies which may occur on drawings and other contract documents that affect the dimensional accuracy of work, including information that is
    • dimensionally accurate
    • missing
    • at variance with other information in other documents
  • check sources of information to ensure that they are up to date in respect of
    • operation boundaries
    • datum points
    • levels of existing buildings and other fixed objects
    • dimensions, location and levels of existing work area
    • building line, frontage line and square line
    • variations between specified and actual work dimensions
    • the personnel responsible for works
  • describe the roles and responsibilities of the contracting parties for dimensional quality control
  • establish lines and levels for building operations including setting up benchmarks, profiles and pegs, using appropriate equipment, including
    • tapes
    • rules
    • spirit levels
    • lines
    • levelling instruments
    • theodolite
  • level the survey framework of a large housing estate, including drainage manhole positions, benchmarks and datum lines
  • set out a house including drainage to designed position and level
  • record readings in an appropriate manner so that reference can be made to them at a later date
  • describe how deviations in position, alignment and level are identified and action taken to remedy such deviations

The course consists of one module, which covers the mathematical and practical work required for basic construction site set out
Course delivery method

Flexible blended learning, consisting of

  • two workbooks
  • support by telephone
  • a two-day site practical
Course assessment
One assignment, completed during the two-day site practical
Duration of the course
Two days for the site practical, plus approximately 30 hours of tutor supported flexible study to complete two workbooks which will provided before the practical

Opportunities for further study
This course covers the material and assignment necessary to complete one module (Maintaining Lines and Levels) of the Chartered Institute of Building’s Certificate in Site Supervisory Studies (CSSS). The Maintaining Lines and Levels module is one of six modules of the CSSS course, and students completing the MOL Certificate of Achievement in Construction Site Set Out will be exempt from this module if they go on to do the CSSS course
