Why study for the CIOB Certificate in Site Supervisory Studies (CSSS)?
The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) is the international voice of the building profession and the leading professional body for managers in construction. It has more than 42,000 members working in 94 countries. Its membership consists of construction managers and professionals who are committed to maintaining the highest standards in construction.
The CSSS course is designed to provide the knowledge and skills that are required to be an effective and professional construction site supervisor or manager. It’s a qualification that demonstrates your current abilities and gives you the basis on which to progress your career in management.
The CSSS syllabus is linked to the standards behind National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs)/Scottish Vocational Qualifications (SVQs), which gives you a flying start towards S/NVQs. Gaining the CSSS is also a step towards a Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) card.

Why study by flexible learning?
Flexible learning (also referred to as blended learning) is based on a highly successful and interactive approach that enables you to fit studying into your other commitments at work and outside work. Our approach includes a blend of
- support and direction from tutors who have practical experience of construction management. Tutors can be contacted by telephone and email, as well as at workshops
- a practical workshop focusing on the ‘maintaining lines and levels’ part of the course, where you work with other students to put the theory into practice and complete an assignment
- learning materials that are interactive and highly practical, and are provided in the most suitable media for the learning required. Our blend of learning materials includes printed workbooks and handouts, CD-ROMs and resources available on our Virtual Learning Environment (VLE)
- access to the CIOB’s Library and Information Services
- assessment based on assignments and no examinations
All course materials, and registration as a CIOB Student Member, are provided as part of your fee.
Why study for your CIOB CSSS with MOL?
MOL is the only training provider offering the CIOB CSSS by flexible learning.
We have worked with CIOB to ensure that the industry itself has helped to shape the programme. The result is a professional programme that meets a need in the industry, delivered in the most accessible way.
Laura Gregory, CIOB Vocational Education Manager, comments:
“The skills gap at site supervisor level is well known and has proved difficult to resolve, particularly for smaller firms. The CIOB Level 3 Certificate in Site Supervisory Studies is a well established qualification, based on very relevant skills that link directly to the NVQ 3 in Construction Site Supervision. This qualification bridges the gap between craft and site personnel who wish to progress to a supervisory position.
“Accessibility to learning is an issue, however, given the everyday demands placed on construction companies. The industry needs a flexible programme that provides site supervisors with a realistic opportunity of accessing and completing. MOL has an established track record of developing and delivering programmes that do just that, and CIOB are very pleased to be working with them.”
