Understanding CIPD Membership

CIPD has a clear membership structure, with each grade of membership requiring specific levels of study and experience.

Affiliate Member Status
When you join any of the recognised CIPD programmes, you are a Studying Affiliate Member since you are progressing your studies.
Associate Member Status (part qualified)
Gained upon successful completion of one of the following
Licentiate Member Status (part qualified)
Gained upon successful completion of one of the following fields of the CIPD Professional Development Scheme (PDS)
- Leadership and Management
- People Management and Development
- Specialist and Generalist Personnel and Development Electives x 4
Graduate Member Status
You must successfully complete all of the following fields of the CIPD PDS
- Leadership and Management
- People Management and Development
- Specialist and Generalist Personnel and Development Electives x 4
- Applied Personnel and Development
Charterd Member Status (Chartered MCIPD)
If you have three years' experience within HR, training and development or a management role, plus Graduate membership, you can apply for MCIPD (full membership status).
Fellow Member Status (Chartered FCIPD)
If you have ten years' strategic experience within HR, training and development or management, plus Graduate membership, you can apply for FCIPD (Fellowship status). If you can satisfy these criteria upon gaining Graduate membership, you can apply for immediate upgrading to this level.
