Specialist and Generalist Personnel and Development (Electives)

What are the Electives?

The Electives provide an opportunity to assess where your career is now and in which direction you would like to take it in the future. The course is divided into modules; with the ‘Generalist' Electives providing an overview of the knowledge and competence required by a personnel and development practitioner and the ‘Specialist' Electives giving you the opportunity to concentrate on a specific area of practice.

MOL offers four Generalist Electives and four Specialist Electives. You need to select four Electives and MOL has placed them into four common career streams, as follows.

Standard Choices of Modules Generalist Development Resourcing Relations
People resourcing
Learning and development
Employee relations
Employee reward
Managing organisational learning and knowledge
Managing the training and development function
Management development
Employment law

We can help you choose the best route through the Electives.

How is the course delivered?

The course is delivered through flexible learning, consisting of

  • one full day induction workshop
  • 11 full day workshops
  • one personal tutorial
  • self-study using MOL workbooks, including access to a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) developed by CIPD and MOL for all learners undertaking the CIPD Flexible Learning+. This interactive learning aid provides opportunities to network with course colleagues and gives access to a variety of additional resources at no extra cost
  • tutor support via email, fax or telephone

MOL breaks the course down so that you only study two modules at once (over a six month period) followed by the next two.

Where do the workshops take place?

MOL has delivery venues throughout the UK.

We can also run in-house company training on your organisation's premises (UK and international). Please see our information about bespoke training for your business.

How long does the course last?

Twelve months (three months per Elective, except for Employment Law which is four to five months)

How will I be assessed?

You will need to attend all the workshops. You will also need to complete

  • four assignments
  • CIPD national examinations (one per Elective)
  • a CIPD learning log

Owing to how MOL breaks down the course, you will only study two modules and only do two assignments at once, plus only two examinations, over the initial six month period.
