CIPD Applied Personnel and Development (AP&D)

What is AP&D

AP&D is your opportunity to show that you can put your skills and knowledge into practice.

Central to this field is the CIPD's concept of the ‘thinking HR performer', which is defined as

  • ‘thinking' that is operational and with an appreciation of organisational strategy
  • ‘performer' with business ability at a business unit level

At MOL, the AP&D field is integrated within the People Management & Development (PM&D) programme.

AP&D is covered by the development of two items of work, which are

  • a Management Research Report (MRR)
  • a CIPD continuous professional development (CPD) record

What is the MRR?

You will be required to produce an MRR of 7,000-8,000 words. The process of creating the report, and the report itself, will consist of

  • carrying out and discussing an experience of project management
  • outlining the substance of the project
  • collecting data
  • analysing and presenting data
  • providing your conclusions and recommendations

What is the CPD record?

You will create a CPD record, which involves

  • a self-managed CPD process
  • presenting CPD evidence
  • participating in learning opportunities and reflecting on them
  • creating personal development plans

Are there any workshops?

There is one workshop, which is integrated into the PM&D field.

Where do the workshops take place?

MOL has delivery venues throughout the UK.

We can also run in-house company training on your organisation's premises (UK and international). Please see our information about bespoke training for your business.

How long does the course last?

The AP&D field is completed as you work on PM&D, which takes eight months.

How will I be assessed?

You will need to attend all the PM&D workshops. You will also need to complete

  • the MRR
  • the CIPD CPD record

These items will be assessed against CIPD's ‘thinking HR performer' concept.
