CAD Course Information

Full name of course

2D Computer Aided Designing using AutoCAD City and Guilds scheme 4351

Aims of the course

This programme is ideal if you want to use 2D AutoCAD professionally and would like to obtain an industry standard qualification in Computer Aided Design, awarded by City & Guilds. The programme is entirely practical, competency based and designed to assist in your career development.

Areas covered by the course

This programme provides you with:

  • A comprehensive insight into Computer Aided Design specifically related to AutoCAD in the production of 2D drawings
  • The skills required to replace traditional methods of drawing production

Course delivery method

The programme comprises learning materials backed up by tutor support and practical workshops.

You will be encouraged through an email network to interact with your fellow participants and to give/receive support. The learning materials will allow you to study at a time and pace to suit you (and your employer if you are employed). This system allows you to study when and where it suits you, with minimum time away from work. In this way you can manage your own workload, minimising the impact on your professional and personal commitments.

You must attend our half-day induction and one full day to take the final assessments. Currently, MOL only offers these events in Manchester, but measures are being taken to expand provision in the future.

Practical sessions are held at regular intervals during the year. You attend as and when you wish – it’s up to you.

Course assessment

To ensure that competency is achieved, assessment is carried out in a variety of ways. The following practical assignments must be completed satisfactorily by all candidates undertaking the standard assessment for this scheme:

  • Mandatory – 'Creating a template drawing' 30 minutes
  • One selected at random from ‘Creating drawings’ 2.5 hours
  • One selected at random from ‘Editing, dimensioning and use of blocks’ 2.5 hours
  • One written multiple-choice question test

The CAD portfolio

For each stage of the qualification you need to compile a CAD portfolio. The portfolio contains evidence demonstrating that you have covered the standards required for the course. Your portfolio could consist of the following items:

  • Job description form - to be completed at induction
  • Time Management and Study Progress Record Sheet
  • All drawings and exercises completed
  • Electronic copies of all drawings and exercises completed
  • Diary of questions raised by you during the course

Duration of the course

There are three possible time frames for completing the course depending on your circumstances. Whichever option you choose, you must complete the programme within 12 months in order to qualify for the City & Guilds award.

Mode 1 – APL (Acquired Prior Learning)

This is for the experienced AutoCAD user who can sign off the course objectives without any formal tuition. In these circumstances you could complete the course in as little as one week.
