AAT (Association of Accounting Technicians’) Accounting Qualification (Diploma pathway)
Full name of courseAAT Accounting Qualification (Diploma Pathway): AAT Certificate in Accounting
Aims of the courseThe AAT Accounting Qualification aims to give you the relevant and practical skills to do a wide range of accounting and finance jobs.
  • You will have a nationally and internationally recognised and respected qualification that shows potential employers that you have been trained to a high standard
  • The AAT qualification is based on actually doing the work. This shows that as well as the underpinning knowledge, you have the skills and practical experience not just to perform in an accounting role, but to excel in it
Areas covered by the courseThe Diploma Pathway consists of three levels, each of which is a qualification in its own right. Each level is made up of a series of units
  • AAT Certificate in Accounting
  • Unit 30 Introductory accounting
  • Unit 31  Accounting work skills

This level will start to develop your skills in double entry bookkeeping and give you an understanding of management and administrative processes. You'll learn how to use manual and computerised accounting systems and to work with the purchase ledger, sales ledger and general ledger.

Course delivery methodThe course is delivered through a combination of day-long tutor-led workshops, exam preparation and revision workshops, with materials designed to support the content of the AAT programme, support groups, and a range of support mechanisms (including a personal tutor who can be contacted via email, telephone, fax, face-to-face or our virtual learning environment).

Each programme has several components, which are
  • an induction session
  • a flexible learning tutorial and workbook
  • allocation to a group
  • a personal tutor for each participant
  • opportunities to network with other students
  • assessment and feedback
  • workshops for major subject areas
  • workshops for examination preparation
Course assessmentAs you work towards your AAT Accounting Qualification, you’ll be assessed on the practical skills you develop during the course. This will be done in two ways – skills test assessments and an examination.

Skills Tests
These course assessments will check your progress regularly and are based on simulations of real work examples.

Exams
These are set and marked by the AAT and will test your ability to apply what you have learned to true-to-life examples. You can choose to sit exams in June or December – and you can also re-take any exams you need to.

In addition, there is a project that students must complete and return within one month of receipt.

All skills test assessments are by AAT-set simulation exercises.

Duration of the courseEach course normally lasts around 6-9 months.
